A Taste of Oils

ADULT PAINTING AND DRAWING WORKSHOP If you've wanted to try oil painting but have been put off by the challenge, this structured workshop is just for you. Learn what oil paint feels like and how to push it around. Find out about color mixing, blending and more. Begin with a simple painting in black, white and grays, then move on to a basic earth palette picture, and then one done with a bright prismatic palette. Portfolio

CHILDREN AND TEEN WORKSHOP - AND ADULTS, TOO! Are you planning a career path in the creative arts? Do you need a portfolio or are you curious if your portfolio is developed enough? This workshop may offer you the information you seek! Students ages 13 to 19 are invited to sign up for a private 45 minute portfolio review session. During that time I will review your portfolio and make suggestions for areas that need some additional work, help edit your portfolio for strength and answer questions you may have. Please bring art works that showcase your best and most current works. Sketchbooks are welcome and encouraged. If you have works that are to be viewed digitally, you will need to bring your own laptop. Sign up early! spots are limited. Call office to arrange your time.

Making Paste Papers

FEATURED WORKSHOP This class AKA "Adult Finger Painting", will give you a use for all those gadgets accumulating in your junk drawer. You'll be amazed at the sophisticated graphic images you can create by coating a dampened sheet of paper with colored paste and then drawing various tools through it. Stamping onto paste-covered sheets will increase your repertoire of designs. We'll go beyond the basics by creating under paintings for double-image work and exploring how to alter brayers to add texture and a relief pattern to papers. You'll learn how to make historic patterns and more relaxed contemporary designs to use on books, cards, collages and other paper art projects. All materials supplied by instructor. Please bring two 2" wide good quality house painting brushes.

Tile Making Techniques

NCECA EVENT In this two day workshop Frank will demonstrate several of the tile making techniques presented in his book Handmade Tiles, Lark 1994, including making a model, pouring a plaster mold, pressing out a tile, shellac resist and glaze application. He will also present a slide show documenting the process of creating the NYC Public Art Projects. Frank will demonstrate making an all clay udu drum and each participant can, hands on, make a small udini drum.

Watercolor Marbling

Level: All Levels

 

FEATURED WORKSHOP The mysteries of a once-secret craft are revealed in this introductory level marbling workshop. We'll apply color to a carrageenan (seaweed), size using broom corn whisks and brushes and then perform magic with a series of marbling combs and rakes. Persian fantasy patterns (hearts, flowers and birds) made with a stylus will also be explored. Splashers as well as precision-oriented students will have an opportunity to create historic combed patterns from the 16th century and more free-form marbled designs. (We'll keep you away from each other, if necessary.) The stunning papers you'll produce can be used on a variety of projects, but chances are you'll want to reserve a few for framing. All materials will be supplied by instructor. Students may bring colored Canson Mi Tiente papers if desired.

Dinner Party Cooking

CULINARY WORKSHOP Learn how to make some exciting recipes that are perfect for your next dinner party. John Blanchet, a veteran of Philly restaurant cooking and an enthusiast of local and healthy food, will instruct and inform you on how to cook dishes suited for entertaining groups of friends. Chef John will give you more confidence to impress your friends and have fun when cooking for a small party. Students will observe and take part in the preparation of the food. Roasted vegetable and ricotta ravioli with herb salad, wild mushroom risotto, and ginger-coriander glazed chicken are some examples of delicious and versatile dinner party fare that you can learn to prepare with this one day culinary workshop.
