Growing Up Green!
Summer Spree 2008

Click here for printable registration form.

Our theme this summer is Growing Up Green!  Our Four sessions feature this special theme and special extras for all campers.  Each session, different Summer Spree Fellows are eager to inspire young artists.  This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for childre to work alongside professional working artists.

MAGIC MORNINGS (Pre-K through 6th grade)

Runs Monday – Friday 9:00 am to 12:00 noon, in two week sessions

Ages 4 through 8 (entering pre-K through entering grade 3)

Young children are eager to immerse themselves in the arts. Children are grouped with others their own age in small classes that encourage them to explore their imaginations through drawing, painting, clay, tie dye, story-telling, and outdoor fun. They will work with lots of different materials to create their own unique works of art.  And they’ll get to spend time in the CAC’s kitchen creating—and eating—fabulous food

Pre-Teen Program: Ages 9 – 11 (entering grade 4, 5, or 6)

Pre-teens are ready to begin mastering materials and skills. They can choose to concentrate an hour each morning on either drawing & painting or ceramics. There is also plenty of time for tie dye, mixed media, and cooking.

MAGIC MORNINGS

Session 1- June 23 to July3

Nature Journaling  with Jim Lockyer

Learn to “see green” as we explore the great outdoors.  We’ll learn to sharpen our perceptions of the world around us, then each make a personal journal for collecting and recording what we see, hear, touch and smell.

Session 2 - July 7 to July 18

Green Glass, Green Leaves, Green Choices, Green Fun with Claire Brill

Come “grow” a mosaic flower garden for the CAC using recycled glass.  We’ll beautify the Arts Center with a new mosaic wall, then everyone will make a trash-to-treasure pot for planting vegetable seedlings. Learn what it means to re-use, recycle, and eat local.

Session 3 - July 21 - August 1

Dig This!  with Robert Deane and Nancy Long

Have you ever wondered where clay comes from? How a seed grows? Now is your opportunity to make a pot from clay dug out of the ground right here at the Arts Center. We’ll roll up our sleeves, learn about the life of seeds, and start a plant in our very own clay pots.

Session 4 - August 4 to August 15

Eco-Art with Tree Byers

How can we use a full-color palette and still make art that's ''green''? That's one question to be explored in this eco-friendly, multimedia outdoor installation project. With the theme of environmental awareness as a starting point, we'll transform the Art Center's backyard into a fun and inspiring artspace that cultivates eco-awareness as well.
Students will work--and play!-- with recycled handmade paper, found objects, vegetable dyes, and other lower-impact materials. Let's see if we can make something beautiful, nurture our creativity, AND respect the Earth!

Magic Mornings at the Community Arts Center

Magic Mornings meet from 9:00 am to 12 noon. We group children by the grade they are entering to maximize their potential for fun and learning. We have a group for every age. No need to choose specific classes. The Magic Mornings program is designed for children to jump into a joyful arts experience.

Art can be messy!  Please wear old clothes that you won't mind getting dirty.

We provide a snack and beverage each day.

Lunch:    If you’d like your child to stay for lunch at Summer Spree, let us know when you register. Lunch is a supervised half hour from 12 noon to 12:30. Children bring their own bagged lunch and a beverage. This fun opportunity to eat and relax with friends is available to campers in Magic Mornings and Pre-Teen program.

Mini Spree For 2’s & 3’s:
Summer Fun for Little Ones!

Tuesdays & Thursdays 9:15 - 11:45 am

We welcome children 2 & 3 years old, with a parent or caregiver, for a nurturing fun-filled experience that includes music, dance, painting, storytelling and water play. Children will explore the beautiful grounds of the CAC and create their own unique sculptures.
